DIVINE MERCY ACADEMY BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Sisters of Divine Providence founded Divine Mercy Academy in 1889. It was originally named St. Mary School and consisted of only two classrooms. Founded for German immigrants, the Sisters educated eight students during the first year. Today we service a majority of Catholic and many non-Catholic students from five school districts. The Academy's physical plant consists of eight classrooms, one kindergarten, a newly renovated preschool/daycare building, a state of the art computer lab, smart boards, library, gymnasium, music room, and a dining room. Our school is staffed by nine full time and three part time teachers and a preschool aide. The school offers preschool, band, Steel Pans, gym, sports, chess, and breakfast and lunch programs. The school also provides seven support personnel: speech therapist, learning support instructor, nurse, guidance counselor, two reading specialists, and a math specialist. We communicate with the school community through email, an online grade book, online homework assignments, and a webpage as well as weekly folders

Divine Mercy also boasts a fine sports program with boys' and girls' basketball for grades 3-8.

Breakfast and lunch programs and extended day services are also offered to all students.

Our school, grounded in the tradition of Gospel values as evidenced through spiritual experiences and service to others, maintains ties with the Sisters of Divine Providence by supporting them financially and inviting them to school as speakers and advisors. We maintain a spiritual focus through service projects and dramatizations of Scripture during Christmas and Lenten seasons, and frequent planning of and participation in Liturgies. Additionally we maintain high expectations and encourage each student to set goals that will allow them to achieve his/her highest potential. We accomplish this through adherence to curriculum guidelines, updated textbooks and audio-visual materials, multifaceted instruction and learning opportunities such as oral and written assignments, group work and projects, cooperative learning and peer tutoring. Consistency of assignments and clarity of work from one grade level to another is maintained. Our graduates are outstanding and contributing members of our local community.
